“No hell below us, above us only sky”

  Imagine, John Lennon, September, 1971

Imagine by John Lennon is probably my favorite song.  It invites us to imagine, dream, pretend – how our world can be.  Lennon’s version of how the world can be wouldn’t work for everyone I suppose.  It works for me. I was a young woman when this song was released – filled with great hope for a peaceful, sane world.  Actually, I’m still filled with great hope for a peaceful, sane world.

“Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.”  Did you ever stop and consider how just plain dumb it is for people in power around the world to believe the only way to resolve differences is to kill each other?  And, lots of time they are killing and dying for religion.  I find it very difficult to believe any higher power or intelligence or love would give our world gold stars for settling our differences by killing each other.  Just doesn’t make any sense at all.

I’m placing my bet on each of us.  We are love and sane and shifting to a new place inside.  Now, that’s something to get excited about.  “Imagine all the people living life in peace.”  Just for a minute consider how many of us on the planet are “living life in peace.”  Most of us.  Not all – I get that – Most!

I also believe in the power of our imagination.  It’s been said imagination is the voice of god, source, the creator, the universe – pick your favorite word.  So, how about we all simply begin spending some time each day in our imagination – imagining the world we want to live in.  I wonder if it’s just that simple?  Somehow, I think it is.  John Lennon had the right idea.

For those of you who have never heard this song, you can see it on YouTube here – along with the other 8.5 million people who have seen it.  Or, here are the lyrics:

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Thanks, Michael – I admire your intention to put what is very difficult to “say” into words – and very beautifully. Stay with it. Your words are meaningful.

I echo a love for Imagine.

How’s this for an imagination experiment: Imagine that you are every person on this planet. Imagine that you are every person that ever was or ever will be. Imagine that you are everything and nothing.

Now, don’t imagine it. *Know* it. 😉
