— Confucius (551- 479 BC)
What great wisdom! This is another way to say who and what I encounter in the world is a reflection of me.
If you’re complaining about clerks in a store who are not courteous – there you are. If your best friend is a martyr or a victim or too emotional – there you are.
Conversely, if you see tenderness and love in the eyes of a friend – there you are. If you find yourself with some very creative, upbeat people – there you are. You get the idea.
A popular phrase these days is “like attracts like.” That means people with similar qualities tend to like each other. So, if you have a friend or a partner – you feel a certain mutual attraction – great. Then the day comes when you find yourself criticizing this person. Just know, most likely, you share the same attribute you are criticizing in the other – like attracts like.
Sometimes a bitter pill to swallow.
It seems to me the greatest gift we can give ourselves and the world is to know ourselves better – learn to look honestly in the mirror of self awareness. Unfortunately, we can’t leave ourselves at home when we go out in the world, so we will attract people and situations to us that are a reflection of us. If you want to know your lessons in this life, just look around – they are looking back at you.
No matter where you go – there you are!
