Circle of Life

I love this Elton John song from the children’s film, The Lion King.  If you haven’t heard it, you can see it on YouTube here.

I’ve also included the lyrics at the end of this post.

I was thinking today about how life is circular.  Remember when everybody thought the world was flat?  Then it was proven our earth is a sphere.  Seems history repeats itself.  Now most of us think time is linear – what if it really is circular – or a sphere?

We are born, live and die – and some (including me) believe – we are born, live and die – the soul or spirit aspect of us – in an eternal dance of re-creation.

I study astrology.  The birth chart is a circle and representative of all of our life across time.  The cosmos is filled with cycles upon cycles upon cycles.  Our lives are a reflection of those cycles.

In Zen Buddhist painting, a circle, called enso symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body/spirit create.

In ancient, pagan teachings the circle represents spirit, unity, wholeness and infinity – without beginning or end.  Circles were often seen as protective symbols.

The Ouroboros is an ancient circular symbol where a serpent or dragon is eating its own tail.  It can represent constant transformation, creativity or the eternal return. It is also the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished.

So, in the ages that have come and gone many people discovered the mystery and the magic of the circle.  I’ll end with the last verse of Circle of Life:

“There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round”

Here are the complete lyrics – they are really beautiful:

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to be seen than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done

Some say eat or be eaten
Some say live and let live
But all are agreed as they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give

In the circle of life
It’s the wheel of fortune
It’s the leap of faith
It’s the band of hope
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life

Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars

There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round
