Religion Doesn’t Hurt Anything?

images[7] (3)“When I hear from people that religion doesn’t hurt anything, I say really? Well besides wars, the crusades, the inquisitions, 9-11, ethnic cleansing, the suppression of women, the suppression of homosexuals, fatwas, honor killings, suicide bombings, arranged marriages to minors, human sacrifice, burning witches, and systematic sex with children, I have a few little quibbles.” – Bill Maher

I was talking with a friend today and the subject turned to religion and the damage it has done over the years.  I expect religion has also been a good force at times.  Like most things in our life – good and bad.  That’s the point.  It’s not all good.  In fact there is a lot of bad as the above Bill Maher quote points out.  And, not all religions are “my way or the highway.”  Many are.  I have never understood how anyone can kill another human being in the name of god.  Whatever divine energy or force created the whole of the cosmos cannot possibly be dumb enough to condone killing in the name of such awesomeness.

The Age of Pisces is coming to an end or has ended.   It began with the birth of Jesus Christ or so the myth goes.  Joseph Campbell taught that religion when read as myth is alive for all of us.  Wonderful stories with wisdom to impart.  When read as history and fact, it loses its message.  It becomes a philosophy to fight over.  An exclusive club that bans many.  We are living in the dawning of the Age of Aquarius – the new woman and man.  Old structures are dissolving.

As the old structures drift away, a new awareness of the divine within and the oneness we all share is stirring in us. We know.  We all know.  That individual knowing is where we will find peace, joy, love and freedom.
