Once In A Blue Moon

clouds-full-moon[1]I live in the Eastern part of the US. Here the Moon will be full on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 6:43 am. This is the second Full Moon this month – many say a Blue Moon. No one seems to know for sure where the term “once in a Blue Moon” originated. Or, why a Blue Moon as opposed to a different description. I’ve just done some quick and dirty research on Google and there are some theories.

From the perspective of astrology all Full Moons are significant. A second Full Moon in one calendar month has no additional significance since it is a function of our calendar system, not anything special the moon is doing.

This particular Full Moon is in the sign of Aquarius. A Full Moon occurs when the Moon is across the sky from the Sun – as seen from our perspective on Earth. The Sun is currently in Leo, so the Full Moon is across the heavens – in the sign of Aquarius. As the year unfolds and the Sun changes signs, so does the Full Moon. Each month the Full Moon is in a different sign and has a different quality as it shines down on us.

Our ancestors long ago kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring Full Moon. The name was applied to the entire month. A recognition of the cycles of life – the Wheel turns.

As I said, currently the Sun is in Leo, the sign most associated with personal creativity. The Moon is in Aquarius and seeks collaboration among equals. In the June/July 2015 edition of The Mountain Astrologer, Stephanie Austin sees it this way:

“We’re still at the dawn of the Age of Aquarius, still struggling to recognize and honor our common humanity, which transcends race, gender, religion, culture and country. We’re still awakening from the nightmare of separation, to the spiritual truth of our unity and interdependence. We’re just beginning to realize that we are far more powerful than we think, and exponentially so when we ally our ideas, talent, and heart. This Full Moon urges us to fearlessly and generously shine our light, so that we can see and be seen by those who share our values and mission. Be yourself. Contribute your gifts. Find your tribe.”

I’ll leave you with a quote from Johnny Depp as you contemplate the energies of this Full Moon:

“What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love.”

Namaste.
